Sleigh Bells and Reindeer
Barry E. Kopetz
Sleigh Bells and Reindeer is a holiday selection that features the sounds
of the sleigh bells and the wood blocks (or temple blocks). Written in
a festive style, the opening introduction is reminiscent of the famous
melody, “Jingle Bells.” Upper woodwinds receive the crisp melody
during its first appearance, and the “clip-clop” accompaniment
of the blocks provides a secure fundamental tempo for the ensemble. Trumpets
also have their moment to play the melody, and the alto saxophone and horn
play other important melodic material in support of the primary theme.
In addition to the interesting percussion writing, many of the brass and
woodwind voices engage in parts that emphasize scale patterns in the key
of Eb major. The percussion is also featured very briefly just prior to
the return of the melody at measure 45. Importantly, all parts are both
interesting and challenging for the ensemble on this grade 2 selection
for concert band.
